Department of Computer Science
FSU Department of Computer Science faculty Dr. Kai Zhao has received the National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award with $572,399 in funding for his project, “CAREER: StreamZ: An Adaptive and Scalable Lossy Compression Framework for Extreme-Scale Scientific Data Streaming Pipelines.” The NSF CAREER Award is NSF’s most prestigious award in support of early-career faculty who demonstrate excellence in research and education.
StreamZ: An Adaptive and Scalable Lossy Compression Framework for Extreme-Scale Scientific Data Streaming Pipelines
Zhao’s project focuses on helping scientists efficiently manage the massive amounts of data continuously generated by large-scale simulations, scientific instruments, and sensor systems. The project will develop StreamZ, a streaming-first compression framework that reduces data as it is produced and allows scientists to quickly retrieve the most important portions of a dataset at the level of detail they need. StreamZ will adapt to changing data characteristics, reduce storage and data-transfer costs, and support efficient analysis across applications in X-ray imaging, cosmology, molecular dynamics, the Internet of Things, and LiDAR. The award also supports student research, curriculum development, and a summer workshop focused on scientific data management, high-performance computing, and cyberinfrastructure.
