Discussio Sessions are the once-a-week class meeting on your schedule, outside of the main lecture. They are an opportunity for students to re-affirm the concepts they learned during the previous week and get immediate feedback from the TA's and LA's.
The TA's would record their impressions of the students which would contribute towards the student's Discussion Sessions grade. The TA's would also have a quick "review" of certain topics if they judge that such a review is warranted based on the performance of the students. The LA's would offer individual feedback to the students and record thei observations of the topics which might require elaboration in the lecture. The LA's will not be doing any grading.
The discussions will be on the Practice Exercises that students have already turned in. The best way to prepare is to complete the Pratcice Exercises an perhaps revoew their solutions before going to the sessions.
Absolutely! The Discussion Sessions are a part of the feedback loop. Students can ask for clarifications or help on the topics thay don't quite yet have a 100% grasp on. It is a DISCUSSION first and foremost. The LA's and TA will also offer suggestions and discuss differnt ideas and apporaches, both individually, and to the section as a whole.
Most Discussion Sessions are scheduled in a Computer Lab, but they can bring their laptop if they wish, to make changes to their submissions, etc.
