Weikuan Yu, Professor and Chair in the FSU Department of Computer Science, has been awarded a grant of $85K for research on Data Reduction for Efficient Checkpoint/Restart of LLM applications from Lawrence Livermore National Lab (LLNL). This project aims to develop data-reduction capabilities, such as compression and deduplication, for large-scale LLM checkpoints to substantially reduce storage consumption and I/O overhead. This project continues Dr. Yu’s decade-long productive collaboration with Dr. Kathryn Mohror at LLNL and builds on top of the prior project of efficient checkpoint/restart for scientific workflows. Dr. Yu and his team plan to develop a checkpoint/restart library to enable data reduction for the checkpoints of large-scale LLM applications.
