Members of the FSU Department of CS typically are assigned 10% responsibility for service as Assistant Professors, 15% as Associate Professors, and 20% effort as Professors. This reflects the expectation that the more senior people will do more professional and public service.
The scope of service is very broad. It includes participation in committees and holding office in academic, professional, industrial, and government organizations (department, college, university, SUS, national, international), editing and reviewing for academic journals, organizing and reviewing papers for conferences. The level of visibility may range from very local, such as work with public schools here in Tallhassee, to very global, such as work for the National Research Council.
