Research

Yifang Wang’s research lies at the intersection of Data Visualization (VIS), Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), and Human-AI Collaboration (HAIC). She bridges computer science with other disciplines to develop techniques and data-driven systems that advance understanding and decision-making on critical questions of human behavior and societal dynamics, with a focus on the science of science (SciSci) and innovation, social mobility and inequity, and public health.

Her interdisciplinary background in both computer science and business school has led her to actively collaborate across diverse research communities, including network science, health, sociology, communication, media art, and others. She also works closely with policy stakeholders on real-world societal decision-making problems, including funding agencies, venture capital firms, and leaders from top-tier universities. These partnerships ensure her research is not only academically rigorous but also impactful and attuned to real-world decision-making needs. In addition, she is interested in exploring data-driven art, to invite reflection, provoke emotion, and encourage public discussion around the latest technologies and social issues. She has published in top-tier venues such as IEEE VIS, IEEE TVCG, ACM CHI, SIGGRAPH Art, and ISEA, and received a Best Paper Honorable Mention at IEEE VIS 2023, the premier data visualization conference. Some of her works have been featured in the Nature journal, Microsoft Research, and other media. Her artworks have been exhibited internationally, including in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, South Korea, and Hong Kong.
