Faculty member(s) proposing change: Peixiang Zhao Other Faculty involved in teaching this course or who have particular interest in its contents: Daniel Schwartz and Sonia Haiduc Course Information: Course Number: COP 4710 Course Title: Database Systems Current Textbook Information Title: Database Management Systems Author: Raghu Ramakrishnan, Johannes Gehrke Publisher: McGraw-Hill, 2002 Date Published: 2002 URL: http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~dbbook/ ISBN#: 978-0072465631 Porposed new textbook information Title: Database Systems: The Complete Book Author: Hector Garcia-Molina, Jeff Ullman, Jennifer Widom Publisher: Prentice Hall Date Published: 2008 URL: http://infolab.stanford.edu/~ullman/dscb.html ISBN#: 978-0131873254 Motivation: Please discuss the reasons for proposing the new textbook. Describe what aspects of the current book you find unsuitable. Describe what aspects of the new book will improve the course, comparing the current textbook with the proposed text. The current textbook is in its third edition and was published in 2003. It has not been updated ever since. Some notions and diagrams are outdated and explanations in some sections are not clear, especially to students. Many students have complained to me about the textbook in the past two years. The new book I plan to adopt is fairly new (2nd edition, published in 2008) and includes both the classic materials and the new trends of relation database systems. This textbook is very clearly written with lot of examples, and thus it has been widely used in many universities, such as Stanford, Columbia and Duke. I have used this book for the course COP5725: Advanced Database Systems and got many positive feedback from students. -- Peixiang Zhao, Ph.D. Assistant Professor Department of Computer Science Florida State University Tallahassee, FL 32306 http://www.cs.fsu.edu/~zhao/ Tel: 850-645-0346
