Class Description

This course offers a hands-on introduction to Unix systems and network administration. Topics include installation, mainte- nance, and extension of a multi-user computer system; development of administra- tive policies and procedures; user assistance and education; specifics of the operating system; and practical troubleshooting and problem solving.

Computer and Network System Administration is an increasingly complex field. The last ten years have generally seen an upturn in the number of system administrators, though there has been a recent sag which appears to be a discouraging trend for future system adminstrators:

Assignments

Notice that 50% of your grade is determined by the work done in the exercises.

Please turn in your exercises on time. No late submissions will be accepted. Extensions will be given on the basis outlined in the next section on excused absences.

For any exercises submitted on Canvas, please note that the assignment submission link will disappear at the stated time.

Excused absences

Excused absences include documented illness, deaths in the immediate family and other documented crises, call to active military duty or jury duty, religious holy days, and official University activities. Accommodations for these excused absences will be made and will do so in a way that does not penalize students who have a valid excuse. Consideration will also be given to students whose dependent children experience serious illness.
