MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD DATE: January 12, 2016 Prepared by: Dr. David A. Gaitros Chair, Undergraduate Curriculum Committee Department of Computer Science RE: ABET Course Reports for COP3014 Course number: COP3014 Course name: Programming I Course review committee members: Chris Lacher, Melina Vastola, Bob Myers Report submitted date: 12/11/2015 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Were there any problems with the coruse last year? If Yes, describe the problems. Given the size of the course the amount of academic misconduct has increased. More and more students are copying others work or hiring people to write the program for them. Additionally the size of the lectures has grown to make teaching the course more difficult. The results are evident in the performance of other students in later coures. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Course committee recommendations to the current/future instructors. 1. Use specific software to check whether students are plagarizing others code. 2. Increase the number of sections. 3. Reduce the size of each lecture. 4. Also would recommend looking into C++11 feature updates and decide which would be appropriate for this course level -- coordinate with UGCC and instructors of COP 3330 and COP 4530 to decide where to best teach newer language features and/or libraries. 5. only assign faculty to teach this course. Also recommend UGCC looking into newer C++11 features, in case there are other CS courses that need such features taught in the 3014/3330/4530 track. Help coordinate where to add them. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Course committee recommendations to department/UCC regarding this course. NA.
