Tenure track faculty can receive a reduction in teaching from 2-1 to 1-1 if they support on average 2 or more graduate research assistants during the three semesters in the preceding calendar year. In addition, tenure track faculty are required to have acceptable performance in teaching and service. Faculty are given 1/2 credit for supporting undergraduate research assistants since their pay is less and the faculty member does not have to pay tuition. Faculty are only given credit for at most one student from another department in a given semester since it benefits the department more to support our own students. Credit for supporting students between multiple investigators on the same grant will be determined by the PI of the grant that funds the research assistant. This policy applies only to supporting research assistants and not for supporting students through scholarships or other types of education grants. Finally, this policy may be waived in years when courses cannot be adequately covered with the number of existing faculty in the department. This policy was unanimously approved by the faculty present during a general faculty meeting on January 18, 2008.
