CNT5605 - 2010 Fall
Group Assignment 3
Printed Journals Due Thursday, September 16, at the beginning of class.

Assignment: Labels, webmin, Documentation

(1) Label your machines. Each team will be given three labels, each for machines "A", "B", and "C".

Affix "A" to your large black machine. Affix "C" to the machine that you installed via NFS. Affix "B" to the remaining machine.

(2) Install webmin on machine "B". You must set it up so that it is available on both your localhost interface and your ethernet interface, but carefully consider the security implications of this — are there any networking steps that you can take to mitigate this availability. (For instance, how about port knocking)?

(3) Visit the dokuwiki here (this link only works inside the lab.)

Go to the documentation section, and create comprehensive public documentation for your three systems (don't put any passwords!)

While I will leave it up to your imagination to create documentation, I would suggest at a minimum that you document the network settings each machine is using — please make sure that you include the MAC address as well as the IP address for your interfaces.

I think that it usually works out best to only use subpages for intricate set-ups. Tables, however, are quite handy. You can document things such as disk layouts, DNS information, packages installed, and any tricks that were helpful in tasks — see the next paragraph for more. This is an ongoing task throughout the semester, and you will receive a grade on the final state of your documentation as your final assignment for the class.

(4) Also on the dokuwiki, please submit a candidate write up for installing webmin in the tasks section in the area reserved for your group. Include your rationale for whatever security steps you use for webmin. I will select the best write up, and set up a link at the bottom of the page in the area under the horizontal rule.

A journal is due for this assignment. Make sure that you document in your journal all of the steps that you went through, following the guidelines on the class home page. Please share the workload so that all team members get experience with all aspects of the work. PLEASE DON'T FORGET TO PUT YOUR TEAM NUMBER ON THE ASSIGNMENT. Please turn in a printed copy of this assignment at the beginning of class on Thursday, September 16.
