Policy for Students affected by Hurricane Irma

Revision date: 09/14/17

All classes at FSU have been impacted by Hurricane Irma in one way or another. Most obvious is the loss of 6 business days due to the closure of the FSU campuses. Students who attend via distance learning have many different circumstances, both in their geographic location and in many cases their "day job". We have students flooded out of their homes, students without electrical power, students called to active national guard duty, and students who are in the ranks of traditional first responders. Collectively, each course is impacted by the individual experiences of its family members (students and instructors).

It is also important to realize that FSU is obligated to end its semester on time while providing students in every class the contact hours associated with the class. These are obligations to students as well as accrediting agencies such as SACS and ABET. Within these constraints, we are committed to as much flexibility as feasible to get students successfully through their classes. Anyone with suggestions along these lines is welcome to contact the course instructor with input.

The following policy will hold for all assignments:

  1. If you have been impacted by Irma in ways that make it difficult for you to keep up with the class schedule, as given in the course calendar, write a short (but coherent) description of your Irma-related circumstances in a text file.
  2. For any programming assignment you need to submit late, insert the Irma explanation at the beginning of the project log.txt which is collected as part of the assignment.
  3. All late fees will be waived for the assignment.

The situation with exams is different. Each student should make every effort to take exams on time, during the exam window announced in the course syllabus. Students who cannot make it for an exam, or for whom exam preparation has been impossible, please contact the instructor directly and as soon as the situation has become clear.
