Below is a brief checklist of items a doctoral student should complete before
graduation:
Degree Requirements Checklist
CIS 5935, Introduction to Research
2 courses from each of the core areas, Software, Systems, Theory
at least 4 courses past the MS degree requirements with at least a B- in each
pass CIS 8962, Qualifying Exam
pass CIS 8964, Preliminary Exam
be admitted to candidacy at least 6 months prior to the awarding of the degree
defend a prospectus and submit a copy of the corresponding university
form (Prospectus Approval Form) to the Office of Graduate Studies, and give the original to the department
for your permanent record -
the form is available at
www.gradstudies.fsu.edu/
satisfy the residency requirement of at least 24 hours of graduate
credit in a 12-month period after completing 32 hours at the graduate
level
complete at least 24 hours of CIS 6980, Dissertation, with two
hours of Dissertation credit in the final term in which the degree is granted (if
all requirements are completed in the semester prior to graduation this can
be reduced to one hour in the graduation semester)
register, at most once, for CIS 8985, Dissertation Defense, and withdraw from
all but one instance if you have registered for this more than once
register for graduation at the Registrar's Office during the first two
weeks of the semester in which you wish to graduate
Defense & Graduation Checklist
determine the manuscript approval deadline & manuscript submission
deadline - these change each semester & are available on the
Registrar's web site under the FSU Academic Calendar
submit the dissertation to the doctoral committee at least 4 weeks in advance
have the dissertation format checked by the Office of Graduate Studies
(see "Electronic Thesis, Treatise & Dissertation Preparation" at the above link for format
information for dissertation) noting the date for manuscript approval on
the FSU Academic Calendar
note deadline for dissertation submission (on FSU Academic Calendar) before scheduling
dissertation defense
schedule defense (at least 2 weeks in advance):
reserve room (typically 151 Love) with the CS senior secretary
reserve PC cart (if needed) by signing up on calendar on the door
in the copy room in 260 Love
inform FSU Office of Graduate Studies of title, room, and time of defense
(see "Defense Announcement" at the above link for the form)
inform CS Graduate Assistant of title, room, and time of defense
see Grad Studies graduation checklists at the above link
complete graduation check with CS Director of Grad Studies
complete graduation check with Registrar's Office & bring the associated
"green" form to defense
obtain the CS Defense Result Form ("green form") from the
CS Graduate Assistant and bring the form
to your defense to record the outcome of the defense
have at least one copy of the dissertation signature page available for
your committee to sign - Graduate Studies only requires one
upon successful defense,
have the CS Defense Result Form and your disseration signature
page signed by your committee,
have the FSU green form signed by the chair of your
committee, the chair of CS, and the Dean of Arts & Sciences
return the CS Defense Result Form to the CS Graduate Assistant
take signature page to Graduate Studies and they will inform you the steps
for submitting an electronic version of the dissertation to the university
submit an electronic version (pdf) of the dissertation to the CS webmaster
complete the departmental EXIT survey and return it to the CS Director of Graduate
Studies
submit a copy of your resume which includes all publications, to the CS
Director of Graduate Studies
if your employment plans are uncertain when completing the EXIT survey, inform the
CS Director of Graduate Studies via email when those plans are complete
