MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD DATE: January 12, 2016 Prepared by: Dr. David A. Gaitros Chair, Undergraduate Curriculum Committee Department of Computer Science RE: ABET Course Reports for CEN4021 Course number: CEN4021 Course name: Software Engineering II Course review committee members: Chris Lacher, David Gaitros, Sonia Haduic Report submitted date: 12/11/2015 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Were there any problems with the coruse last year? If Yes, describe the problems. Deciding on the best approach to this class while using one of the current books is difficult. The state of technology using in Software Engineering changes rapidly. Semester 1 involves group forming and learning basic software engineering / modeling techniques. Semester 2 is heavily group oriented and involves developing the software planned in semester 1. The 3 basic areas of the book are: 1) Basic modeling 2) Working on teams 3) Software designs and architecture By putting item (3) off until semester 2, it means that they don't learn the information until they are already well down the path of implementation. Students who return to the university and discuss the experience in industry indicate that agile software development techiques and pattern programming are gaining more emphsis. The other problem is that students are given a considerable amount of time to develop a significant piece of software but data suggests the time is not used wisely. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Course committee recommendations to the current/future instructors. Software Engineering II be an elective and not a required course. Any ABET requirements be included in Software Engineering I or other course. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Course committee recommendations to department/UCC regarding this course. NA.
