Visualizing the Cortical Surface of the Human Brain Monica K. Hurdal Department of Mathematics and CSIT Florida State University The human brain has many folds and fissures that vary significantly in size, shape and extent between individuals. As a result, there is great interest in "unfolding" and visualizing the cortical surface to create a flat map of the brain. These maps can then be used to compare anatomical and functional differences between subjects. I will present my approach to creating flat maps of the brain surface, show some of the maps that I have created and demonstrate how visualizing the brain can lead to new research results.
