Research in the Internet Technology Cauldron Geoffrey Fox School of Computational Science and Information Technology Florida State University We discuss our research effort which uses largely commercial technology (Java XML CORBA etc.) to reseach issues in large scale distributed systems -- How to make Java high performance? How to do Web Computing? How to do distance education? etc. Research issues include architecture and difficult problems like security, fault-tolerance, integration of PDA's and supercomputers into large scale "grids". We show how students can compete with much larger commercial efforts and with a PhD qualify for a broader range of jobs in both industry and academia.
