Eclipse and UML Tools

This is a basic introduction for anyone who is interested in using an integrated development environment (IDE) and/or a UML tool in this course.

There are many IDEs and UML tools, and UML tools integrated into IDEs. Some of these cost money, and some are either entirely free or available at little or no cost for student use. All of them require an investment of time to learn. The investment should be paid off, in the long run, through increased productivity.

Unfortunately the amount of time it takes to learn to use such tools stand in the way of learning multiple tools. Therefore, in this course, you and your team will probably be able to afford the time to work with at most one.

Probably the best-known and most widely used open-source IDE with support for UML is Eclipse. You can get information and free copies of the Eclipse code via links from www.eclipse.org.

I have installed Eclipse, with UML plug-ins, on my laptop computer. I obtained this by following the link "Eclipse Modeling Tools" at the above address. I have played with it enough to see that it works, but have not yet developed any skill with it. I plan to give a tiny demonstration in class.

If anyone is interested in using the IBM/Rational tools, I can get free copies of those, including the Rationa "Rose" modeling tool, for free educational use.
