Using Xwindows

First, if you want to use Xwindows at home, you need some software such as Xwin32 from StarNet Communications.

(1) If you are on-campus or dial into CS (applies only to grad students/faculty): ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Start Xwin32. If you are on campus then a session for the machine you would like to use has probably already been created. Right-click on the Xwin taskbar entry, go to sessions, and see if the machine you would like is listed. If it is, then select that session and use your CS username and password to logon.

--or if there is not already a session created for that machine, select X-Util32 and follow the directions below.

To create a session:

1. Select Xutil and go to Sessions -> New Session

2. Name this session something like "shell," "diablo," etc.

3. Select rexec or rsh, multiple windows, and fill in the fields as
hostname : shell.cs.fsu.edu , or another host login : < your username> Command : xterm -ls -sb -display $DISPLAY:0.0 & This issues an xterm with a scrollbar (-sb) and a login shell( -ls) and sets the DISPLAY to your display. The -sb and -ls can be made optional Password : ( if rexec is chosen) if you fill in your password, then next time, it won't prompt you to enter your password.

4. Click OK and close the Xutil window.

5. New xterms can be now started by right clicking the Xwin entry in the taskbar and choosing sessions -> shell .

Note : the other sessions you see such as Unix etc. can be deleted from your menu using Xutil -> sessions -> sessionname -> remove (2) If you dial in using the FSU ACNS dialup or the other ISP : ---------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Dial in using ACNS or the other ISP dialup such as AOL etc.

2. Start up Xwin32 but do not open any sessions (It should appear in the taskbar on your home PC)

3. Open up the windows telnet and telnet to shell.cs.fsu.edu with username and password. We need to find out the assigned IP# ( You can find out your IP#, by typing "ipconfig" in the dos prompt of your PC.)

4. then in this ssh window, set your DISPLAY var to the IP# you have been assigned by the ACNS dialup.

5. eg. if your ACNS assigned IP was 146.201.6.203 do ( in the ssh window:) if you are running any csh or tcsh : ( got by typing 'ps' at the prompt) setenv DISPLAY 146.201.6.203:0.0 Note the ":0.0" at the end or setenv DISPLAY xyp-03.acns.fsu.edu:0.0 if xyp-03.acns.fsu.edu == 146.201.6.203 if you are running any bash shell: ( got by typing 'ps' at the prompt) export DISPLAY=146.201.6.203:0.0 Note the ":0.0" at the end or export DISPLAY=xyp-03.acns.fsu.edu:0.0

6. Right click on the xwin in the taskbar and select X-Util. Under Options -> Xhost : Add shell.cs.fsu.edu and click OK. This XUtil window can now be closed.

7. Then you can run xterms or other X-apps from this ssh window eg. type "xterm" at this ssh window and an xterm should popup. type "appletviewer html file" and an AppletViewer should popup.
