Using SLIP

Currently, SLIP is available only to those users with access to the Annex dial-up line (faculty and graduate students). You will need a modem and certain SLIP software as shown below.

To initiate a SLIP session, just login as usual and then type "slip" at the prompt. Much of the SLIP software will allow you to do this in a script.

For Macintosh users

  • First you need a SLIP driver (like the one provided by InterCon for free via ftp), or you can buy commercial software like VersaTerm AdminSLIP or InterCon's TCP/Connect II package. The demo software at InterCon. is here. (Mac installer is about 2 MB large)
  • You also need a TCP/IP driver. Apple has MacTCP 2.0.4, InterCon has their own driver, as does VersaTerm. ACNS has a site license for MacTCP for use on the FSU campus, so if you are using SLIP from a location that falls under this license, you can ask them for a copy.

This file also has some general info.

For Windows users

To run SLIP on Windows, you'll need Trumpet Winsock (has a built-in SLIP driver). Then to run Mosaic, you'll need:
  1. WinMosaic 1.0 (240175K zipped) or WinMosaic 2.0a7 (288404K zipped)
  2. Windows 32-bit extension (for WinMosaic 2.0 and newer) (1269110K zipped)
  3. Viewers for Mosaic
  4. Pkunzip in order to "unzip" the compressed files above.
  5. For more information see the NCSA Mosaic for MS Windows file.
