FTP information with regard to the CS department

You cannot ftp into the machines at school.

To transfer files to and from your account, you may only use sftp.

SFTP

You may sftp to any machine which you are allowed to logon.

1. To connect to shell.cs.fsu.edu

type sftp username@shell.cs.fsu.edu at the command line.

2. Enter your password when prompted.

You can follow the same steps to connect to a different machine, replacing shell with the appropriate machine name. Type help at the sftp prompt for a list of commands.

UNIX ftp

1. To start the program type ncftp and Return. The prompt will change to ncftp>

2. To connect to a site as an anonymous user, type open sitename

e.g., to connect to Microsoft's annonymous ftp site, type open ftp.microsoft.com.

3. For sites where a login is required, type open -u sitename

4. Type set ftp-mode passive which enables passive mode transfers.

You can type help at the ftp prompt for other options. If you would like more information on ftp see man ftp or man ncftp.

Window FTP Software

With any Windows software fill in the relevant fields:

For example, in WS-FTP you can select Options and then the Sessions tab.

Check the "Use Passive Transfer Mode" box.

Other helpful information is

Host: (for example) ftp.microsoft.com

Type: Unix Std

The rest should be intuitive. The reason for this is to get through the firewalling done at the router.
