One invents new artifacts.
Accepted standards of quality include:
- The artifact must be useful.
- The artifact must be original. The originality may take
different forms. For example, it might be the first piece of
software to serve a particular purpose, or it might serve the same
purpose as other software but apply ideas or techniques that had
not previously been tried for that purpose. If there is previous
related work, there must be a demonstrable improvement in quality.
Improvements might be in utility, speed, efficiency, adaptability,
or application of better theory.
- The artifact or its intellectual
derivatives should be widely adopted.
