Introduction

The following information is provided as context for the reading of promotion and tenure binders from the Department of Computer Science, at the request of the Dean of Arts & Sciences.

The reader is first directed to the following two appendices, which have some official standing:

  1. The Procedures and Criteria for Evaluation and Promotion, Tenure, and Salary Increase Recommendations approved by the faculty of this department, which is provided as Appendix A, and from which some text is also quoted in Section 9.

  2. An article from Computing Research Review, entitled ``Best Practices Memo: Evaluating Computer Scientists and Engineers For Promotion and Tenure'', which is provided as Appendix D

The rest of the information in this report reflects the views of the department chair, with input from those faculty who chose to contribute. The information is very general, since it is intended to apply to the whole of the Department of Computer Science, and the field of research and scholarly activity covered by this department is very diverse. (Some idea of the extent of this diversity is given by the lists of special interest groups of the two main CS professional organizations, which are included as Appendix B.)

More detailed information has been provided in some of the specific areas of activity relevant to the cases of the current candidates for promotion and tenure from this department.
