Minimum Admission Criteria
The following are the minimum criteria for admission to the graduate program in Computer Science. Satisfying these minimum criteria does not guarantee admission. All students admitted to the program significantly exceed these criteria in at least some areas.
- Required Degrees: To be admitted to the Department of Computer Science as a graduate student you should have an an undergraduate or graduate degree in Computer Science or related field from an accredited university. Students without an undergraduate degree in CS will be required to complete undergraduate prerequisites not on their undergaduate transcript before graduating with a graduate degree in CS. Students without a prior undergraduate or graduate degree in computer science should have at least 18 semester hours of credit in upper level undergraduate computer courses to be considered competitive for admissions.
- GRE Scores:The minimum GRE score required for admission to the Department of Computer Science is 1100 (Verbal and Quantitative combined) with a minimum of 650 on the Quantitative.
- TOEFL Scores: The minimum required score on the IBTOEFL for the university is 79-80 (213 computer-based, 550 paper based). However, a score of at least 100 is expected for foreign (non-native English speaking) students seeking Computer Science degrees. Students seeking positions as teaching assistants or research assistants should have scores above 105 (250 for the computer based, 620 paper based). The ability to lecture in English will be a major consideration in the selection of students for Teaching Assistantships.
- Grade Point Average: Students should have at least a B (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) average to be considered competitive. Students with a GPA of less then 3.0 in their undergraduate degree fall below both the department and university standards.
Students Seeking Admission to CS from Other FSU Departments
- Previously Enrolled in CS: Students who enrolled in the CS Graduate Program within the past seven years will need to complete an application for readmission. Students who did not complete their degrees only need to submit the application for readmission. Students that completed the MS degree (or will be completing the MS degree in the current semester) will need to request three letters of recommendation from professors and have them sent to the Graduate Coordinator.
- Previously Enrolled in Another FSU Graduate Program: Students who enrolled in another FSU graduate program within the past seven years at FSU must do the following:
- An application for readmission must be completed.
- Three signed and sealed letters of recommendation attesting to the student's abilities to start and finish an advanced degree in computer science must be provided to the Graduate Coordinator.
- Academic qualifications must meet or exceed the CS Minimum Admission Criteria described above.
- If the student is wishing to transfer departments without completing their degree program or concurrently pursue a second degree in CS, a signed and sealed letter must be sent from the student's current department at FSU to the CS Department, giving the student permission to do so.
