Starting the Remote Process in an External Window

If you cannot start the remote process automatically, you can start it in an external window. For example, this might happen due to lack of swap space.

To start the RPC in an external window:

  1. Choose Controls > Remote Process > Configure..., and set the Start the Remote Process Automatically? option to no.

  2. Move aside or iconify the G2 window.

  3. In a background window, start the executable file appropriate for your platform.

This table shows all the executable commands for the various supported platforms and operating systems:

    Executable Command Platform/OS
    alphanol
    Alpha OSF
    hp700nol
    HP 700
    motornol
    Motorola
    sginol
    SGI
    vaxnol.exe
    VAX/VMS
    alphanol.exe
    Alpha Open VMS
    hp800nol
    HP 800
    necnol

    Alpha NT
    mipsnol
    DEC ULTRIX
    rs6nol
    IBM RS 6000
    sun4nol
    SunOS

  4. When the program runs, you will see a message that looks like this:

In this case, the host is mach and the TCP-IP port is 22041. Under VMS, the message will be:

In this case, MACH is the host and the DECNET port is GSI0.

If the default DECNET or TCP/IP port is not available, GSI will choose the port name for you.

  5. Return to the G2 window, and select the Remote Process > Connect menu choice.

You will be prompted for a machine name and a port number.

  6. Enter the same machine name and port number that appeared as a result of starting the RPC in Step 4, and select OK.

Wait until G2 responds with a message about the success or failure of the connection.

  7. To confirm that the remote process is connected, select the Remote Process > Ping menu choice.

When you are finished running NeurOn-Line, you should shut down the RPC manually, from either within G2 or externally.

To shut down the RPC manually:
