Different Degrees at FSU
Many students interested in careers that involve the use of computers
automatically come to the Computer Science department as their first stop.
This is natural, as we are the department whose name starts with
"Computer.". However, there are other programs available here at FSU that
also prepare students to work with computers and information
technology. Below is a brief description of each of these programs. For
more detailed information, please see the web site of each program.
College of Arts & Sciences
Computer Science, Software
Engineering
- The scientific and mathematical study of computing and computer
systems.
- The courses required for the degree provide instruction in the
following topics: computer architecture, software development,
programming languages, theory of computation, operating systems,
databases, artificial intelligence, information systems security,
networks and data communication, graphics, computational methods in
science.
Computational Biology
Computer Criminology
College of Business:
Management Information
Systems
Career paths vary from highly technical to training and support of
information systems users. Feedback from recruiters indicates that
the FSU MIS graduates have a desirable mix of a) business knowledge, b)
exposure to multiple programming languages, c) technical knowledge of
analysis and design of information systems, and d) qualitative "people"
skills such as working in teams and making presentations.
The foundation of the MIS education is business; the degree is a
business degree. Courses cover basic business processes and
functions (e.g., finance, accounting, marketing); introductions to several
programming languages; tools for the design and analysis of systems
databases, information systems, and communication systems; and experience
in using these tools to create business systems.
School of Information Studies:
Information Studies
- The study of information in its relationship to the end-user.
- Includes information sources, information systems, and information
seeking behavior.
- Emphasis on developing efficient processes for information collection,
evaluation, organization, storage, use, distribution, and
representation.
- The courses required for the degree provide instruction in the
following topics: website development and administration, interface
design, network administration, project management, information and image
organization and representation, electronic information sources
College of Engineering (in conjunction with FAMU):
Computer Engineering
- The study of the hardware devices and software components used in
the design of electronic, information processing systems.
- The courses required for the degree provide instruction in the following topics: circuit analysis and design, electronics,
electromagnetics, signal and linear, systems analysis, communications,
statistics, digital logic design, VHDL, microprocessors, computer
architecture, computer networks, object oriented programming
and computer operating systems.
