Admissions

Entry into the SE track is selective and limited. Acceptance into the department's graduate program does not guarantee acceptance into either of these two specialized tracks. Candidates must first meet the department's general admission requirements for the master's program. (This assumes an undergraduate degree in Computer Science or the equivalent.) Further selection is then made by the Oversight Committee , based on the qualifications of the applicants, as positions become available.

As a special condition of admission to this major a student must satisfy a Field Experience Requirement, or agree to satisfy the requirement before graduation. The intent is that a student who completes this track will have experience performing a range of tasks that demonstrate the competency expected of a professional in the area. Students must have a minimum of one year of full-time equivalence of documented software engineering experience involving actual work as a member of a software development team, with real customers, for pay.

The Oversight Committee will review and approve documented student experience to assure it fulfills the Field Experience Requirement.

To be considered for admission to this track, a student must either already be in the general Master's program in the department, or have submitted a concurrent application for admission to the general Master's program.

Application for the track is separate from application for admission to the university. You should obtain a copy of the CNSA/SE track application form from http://websrv.cs.fsu.edu/academics/grad/cnsa/cnsaform.html, fill it out, and submit it to be considered for admission to the track. The Oversight Committee generally meets once in the middle of fall term, to consider applications for the spring term, and once in the middle of the spring term, to consider applications for the fall term.

Admissions to the track will be conditional on there being a faculty advisor who is approved by the Oversight Committee to supervise the student in the track. Applicants for the track who are already admitted to the Master's program are encouraged to obtain prior approval of an advisor, and identify that person in their application. Otherwise, an applicant may be admitted with the condition that they find an advisor within twelve months of admission. Changes in advisor require new approval of the Oversight Committee.

If a student later requires readmission to the university, the decision whether to readmit to the SE track will be a separate decision, requiring new approval of by the Oversight Committee.
