SEVIS Fee
NEW SEVIS FEE REQUIREMENT: FACULTY AND STAFF SEVIS, the Student and
Exchange Visitor Information System, is a central computerized system
that maintains and manages data about your exchange visitors on the J
visa, foreign students (F-1, J-1), and their dependents (F-2 and J-2)
during their stay in the United States. The SEVIS program was
implemented a year ago for all international students and scholars.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced a new fee of
$100 to begin this fall for all new J-1 and F-1 applicants. The fee
is required under SEVIS and is to be used to cover the costs of the
operation of the program. The rule that implements this fee goes into
effect September 1, 2004.
Who must pay the fee?
J-1 Exchange Visitors and F-1 Students beginning new programs with
documents (I-20 forms for F-1s, DS-2019 forms for J-1s) issued on or
after September 1, 2004, will be required to pay the $100 fee before
applying for a visa. Those non-immigrants already in the United
States in another immigration status, who want to change to F-1 or
J-1 status, will have to pay the fee before applying for a change of
status to F-1 or J-1. Canadians will be required to pay before going
to US Port of Entry. The fee can not be paid at the port of entry.
The $100 SEVIS fee is in addition to any other application fees.
When do prospective students or exchange visitors pay the SEVIS fee? Applicants needing a visa to enter the U.S. should pay the SEVIS
fee at least 3 business days before going to the U.S. embassy or
consulate for their visa interview.
Applicants who are citizens of Canada or Bermuda or residents of
certain other islands described in 8CFR 212.1a wishing to apply for
F-1 or J-1 status should pay the SEVIS fee at least 3 business days
before entering the U.S. at a Port of Entry into the U.S.
Non-immigrants currently in the U.S. who apply for student or
exchange visitor status must pay the fee prior to filing their change
of status application.
Continuing students and scholars will generally not be responsible
for paying this fee unlesss they have been out of legal immigration
status and must apply for a reinstatement.
How does one pay the fee?

Minimum Admission Criteria
The following are the minimum criteria for admission to the graduate program
in Computer Science. Satisfying these minimum criteria does not guarantee
admission. All students admitted to the program significantly exceed these
criteria in at least some areas.
- Required Degrees: To be admitted to the
Department of Computer Science as a graduate student you should have an an
undergraduate or graduate degree in Computer Science or related field from an
accredited university. Students without a prior undergraduate or
graduate degree in computer science should have at least 18 semester hours of
credit in upper level undergraduate computer courses to be considered
competitive for admissions.
- GRE Scores:The minimum GRE score required for admission to the
Department of Computer Science is 1100 (Verbal and Quantitative combined) with
a minimum of 650 on the Quantitative.
- Grade Point Average: Students should have at least a B (3.0 on a
4.0 scale) average to be considered competitive. Students with a GPA of less
then 3.0 in their undergraduate degree fall below both the department and
university standards.
- TOEFL Scores: The minimum required score on the TOEFL for the
university is 550 (213 for the computer based). However, a score of at least
600 is expected for foreign (non-native English speaking) students seeking
Computer Science degrees. Students seeking positions as teaching assistants or
research assistants should have scores above 620 (250 for the computer based).
The ability to lecture in English will be a major consideration in the
selection of students for Teaching Assistantships.
Students Seeking Admission to CS from Other FSU Departments
Students who have previously been admitted for graduate study in another
department at FSU need not file a new application with the University, but
before such a student may transfer to the CS Department to seek an advanced
degree the following departmental requirements must be satisfied:

Department.
- Three letters of recommendation attesting to the student's abilities to
start and finish an advanced degree in computer science must be
provided.
- Academic qualifications must meet or exceed the CS Minimum Admission
Criteria described above.
- A signed letter must be sent from the student's current department at FSU
to the CS Department, giving the student permission to transfer to or
concurrently pursue a second degree in the Computer Science Department.
No application will be processed until all four of the above requirements
have been met.
